★★★★★ 5 Stars
Before purchasing my MOD Easy SideCar Sahara, I spent considerable time researching and comparing electric scooters with sidecars against electric bicycles with sidecars. My two finalists were the Aventura-X EV4DOG electric scooter and the MOD Easy SideCar Sahara. Ultimately, the Sahara won me over with its vintage motorcycle styling, versatility, impressive battery range, and substantially lower price.
The comparison was compelling. The Aventura-X scooter costs approximately $8,400, compared with around $3,900 for the Sahara. The MOD also offers a 750W motor, an advertised range of up to 50 miles per battery (potentially 100 miles with the dual-battery configuration), and the flexibility of riding with pedal assist or simply cruising using the thumb throttle. Unlike the scooter, I can extend my riding range by contributing some pedal power. For my intended recreational use, the Sahara offered considerably more versatility and value.
DELIVERY & ASSEMBLY
The bike arrived within a week of purchase, securely packaged in cardboard cartons strapped to a shipping pallet. Assembly went smoothly for the most part, although I found the black-and-white photographs in the printed assembly manual somewhat difficult to interpret. Fortunately, MOD provides instructional videos on YouTube, which I downloaded and found much easier to follow. I would definitely recommend watching those videos before beginning assembly.
DESIGN & PERFORMANCE
The Sahara is an exceptionally attractive machine! Its vintage military-inspired styling reminds me of the legendary German Zündapp KS 750 motorcycle and sidecar used during World War II’s North African Campaign. The Sahara captures that rugged, adventurous character beautifully, while offering the convenience of modern electric technology.
The ride itself is remarkably smooth, whether pedaling with electric assistance or simply cruising under battery power.
One important handling observation: With the sidecar mounted on the right, left turns feel stable and comfortable, even at moderately higher speeds. Right turns, however, require considerably more caution. At higher speeds, the forces acting on the sidecar can create an unsettling sensation that the sidecar might lift and the bike could tip over. I’ve learned to slow down significantly when making right turns. It’s an important characteristic of sidecar handling that new owners should understand and respect.
THE REAL REASON I BOUGHT IT — ODIN!
Like many other sidecar enthusiasts, my primary motivation for purchasing the Sahara was to enjoy outdoor adventures with my four-legged companion, Odin, my 68-pound yellow Labrador Retriever.
Our first few outings were rather entertaining! Odin was understandably timid, sitting stiffly in the sidecar with what I can only describe as white-knuckled paws, wondering what on earth his human had gotten him into!
But what a transformation!
After several rides, Odin has become quite the enthusiastic copilot. Now, all I have to say is “Bike ride!” and his ears immediately perk up, his tail starts wagging, and he’s ready for our next adventure. Seeing him enjoying the scenery and fresh air from his sidecar makes the entire purchase worthwhile.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
I couldn’t be happier with my MOD Sahara. It’s beautifully styled, comfortable to ride, versatile, and an absolute joy to own. The MOD staff were also exceptionally helpful throughout the purchasing process, assisting with my order and helping me select the appropriate accessories.
Aside from the somewhat confusing printed assembly instructions and the learning curve associated with sidecar handling, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
The Sahara isn’t simply an electric bicycle — it’s a wonderful recreational machine that turns an ordinary afternoon ride into a little adventure.
And judging by Odin’s wagging tail, I think he would give it five stars, too!
Here’s to many years and miles of adventures together!
